We will train a generative adversarial network GAN to generate new celebrities after showing it pictures of many real celebrities. Also, for the sake of time it will help to have a GPU, or two. Lets start from the beginning. They are made of two distinct models, a generator and a discriminator. The job of the discriminator is to look at an image and output whether or not it is a real training image or a fake image from the generator.

During training, the generator is constantly trying to outsmart the discriminator by generating better and better fakes, while the discriminator is working to become a better detective and correctly classify the real and fake images.

Now, lets define some notation to be used throughout tutorial starting with the discriminator. From the paper, the GAN loss function is. However, the convergence theory of GANs is still being actively researched and in reality models do not always train to this point. A DCGAN is a direct extension of the GAN described above, except that it explicitly uses convolutional and convolutional-transpose layers in the discriminator and generator, respectively.

It was first described by Radford et. The discriminator is made up of strided convolution layers, batch norm layers, and LeakyReLU activations. The input is a 3x64x64 input image and the output is a scalar probability that the input is from the real data distribution. The generator is comprised of convolutional-transpose layers, batch norm layers, and ReLU activations. The strided conv-transpose layers allow the latent vector to be transformed into a volume with the same shape as an image.

In the paper, the authors also give some tips about how to setup the optimizers, how to calculate the loss functions, and how to initialize the model weights, all of which will be explained in the coming sections. In this tutorial we will use the Celeb-A Faces dataset which can be downloaded at the linked site, or in Google Drive.

Once downloaded, create a directory named celeba and extract the zip file into that directory.

Then, set the dataroot input for this notebook to the celeba directory you just created. The resulting directory structure should be:. Now, we can create the dataset, create the dataloader, set the device to run on, and finally visualize some of the training data. With our input parameters set and the dataset prepared, we can now get into the implementation. We will start with the weigth initialization strategy, then talk about the generator, discriminator, loss functions, and training loop in detail.

This function is applied to the models immediately after initialization. In practice, this is accomplished through a series of strided two dimensional convolutional transpose layers, each paired with a 2d batch norm layer and a relu activation. It is worth noting the existence of the batch norm functions after the conv-transpose layers, as this is a critical contribution of the DCGAN paper. These layers help with the flow of gradients during training.

Notice, the how the inputs we set in the input section nzngfand nc influence the generator architecture in code. Below is the code for the generator. Check out the printed model to see how the generator object is structured.

This architecture can be extended with more layers if necessary for the problem, but there is significance to the use of the strided convolution, BatchNorm, and LeakyReLUs.

All images are pre-processed with mean and std of the ImageNet dataset before being fed to the model. None of the code uses GPU as these operations are quite fast for a single image except for deep dream because of the example image that is used for it is huge.

You can make use of gpu with very little effort. The example pictures below include numbers in the brackets after the description, like Mastiffthis number represents the class id in the ImageNet dataset. I tried to comment on the code as much as possible, if you have any issues understanding it or porting it, don't hesitate to send an email or create an issue. Another technique that is proposed is simply multiplying the gradients with the image itself.

Results obtained with the usage of multiple gradient techniques are below. Smooth grad is adding some Gaussian noise to the original image and calculating gradients multiple times and averaging the results [8]. There are two examples at the bottom which use vanilla and guided backpropagation to calculate the gradients.

Number of images n to average over is selected as CNN filters can be visualized when we optimize the input image with respect to output of the specific convolution operation.

I only implemented it for linear layers because the authors used it that way in the paper. I'll submit a pull request pending approval. Hoping this gets some attention before I implement that.

Only just spotted this when browsing the PyTorch forums! I implemented a simple version just for my own needs herebut a properly designed layer would be nice. As you mentioned, I think picking new noise variables and setting them to 0 are pretty much the only things that you need to add.

Perhaps you could have zero noise be triggered when calling. The PR for this would need: code, docs, tests. On the other hand, noisy linear layers are fairly generic layers and could see use in problems outside of RL. I'm planning on fixing this up tonight and adding methods for turning the noise off and for resampling the noise. Will submit a PR once I'm done. It is pretty critical that the module shows these behaviours beyond simply passing the automatic differentiation checks.

Dug into these most recent failures. It appears to be checking that using deepcopy to copy the layer doesn't change the gradient of the parameters.

I think deepcopy might be resampling the noise somewhere, which would definitely trigger assertEqual to fail on parameter grads if that's the case. Can somebody else please take a look at this? We revised the basis model structure and data generation process, and rewrote the testing procedure to make it work for real noisy images. More details can be found in the code implementation. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to boost the performance of a real image denoiser which is trained only with synthetic pixel-independent noise data. We then investigate Pixel-shuffle Down-sampling PD strategy to adapt the trained model to real noises. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and generalization ability of the proposed approach.

The proposed blind denoising model G consists of a noise estimator E and a follow-up non-blind denoiser R. It can achieve the disentanglement of the two noises as shown. We follow the submission guideline of DND benchmark to achieve the following results.

The baseline model is the one without explicit noise estimation. We provide the pretrained model saved in the logs folder. To replicate the denoising results on real images in DND benchmark and other real images, simply run.
