Thank You! Sure, Sign Me Up!Known for its advanced durability, water resistance and ease of installation, MLF is rapidly taking over the hard surface category. Because of this, installers need to be made aware of the proper procedures for preparing subfloors and installing MLF products.

Unlike traditional glue-down tiles, MLF products can be installed over imperfect subfloors due to its enhanced rigid core surface. David Altman, director of research and development at Metroflor Corp. Having the ability to install MLF products over blemished subfloors saves installers a lot of time on projects, added Kevin Flannigan, national field services manager at Mohawk Flooring.

Jim Kups, technical manager at Novalis Innovative Flooring, added that although little preparation is needed for installing MLF products, standard pre-installation procedures still apply.

Another key feature of multilayer flooring is its ability to sustain in environments that are more prone to moisture, including bathrooms, laundry rooms and kitchens. MLF products also possess the enhanced durability to withstand extreme flooding conditions, an area in which its glue-down predecessors fall short.

But installers should still use sound judgment when working in moisture-prone areas, said Len Daubler, hard surfaces technical support manager at Shaw Industries. Additionally, use a silicone caulk around the perimeter where the flooring meets a vertical surface. In areas where water may spill on the surface or get under the floor, the perimeter expansion zone should be filled with silicone prior to installing the wall trims, added Morgan Hafer, installation and project manager for Armstrong Flooring.

Most flooring manufacturers will also specify a maximum moisture limit for their MLF products, which is something installers should take heed of when addressing moisture issues. Joe Cea, installation specialist at Congoleum Corp. For concrete in new construction that has not been allowed to fully cure, it is recommended that four-milliliter clear plastic be used as a barrier.

Installers should also be knowledgeable of the different types of moisture issues and how to address them, said Altman. The installers were able to go in, unsnap the entire floor, dry it out and reinstall the planks in perfect condition without any problems, said Flannigan. Most MLF products consist of a click and locking system, which makes it easier to install and allows for faster repair service.

Testing out the product is one key way installers can acquaint themselves with how different locking systems work, Daubler added. Anyone installing flooring should never force materials to fit together. Read the instructions and warranties from each manufacturer you are going to sell and install, and ask questions! Tech reps would rather answer questions before a project than inspect it afterwards. I want to hear from you. Tell me how we can improve. The Floor Pro Community. We decided on LVT for our main level, lower level and stairs, but we're not happy with the stairs. They have an overlap bullnose instead of a flush bullnose, which makes it very uncomfortable going down and I'm afraid my elderly mother will trip on the overlay. I'm used to carpeted stairs or at work we have a cement stairs both flush.

I unfortunately thought all stair treads would be flush. I hope there is something that we can do without having to put on carpet treads or redo the stairs with wood treads. I wanted to go carpet free due to allergies. The Carpet One sales associate indicated the Shaw representative said there was nothing they could do.

We're happy with the LVT on the main level and our lower level, it's just the stairs that aren't working. Any suggestions? Some questions for you: Do the nosings match your LVT or are they of a different material such as metal, laminate, or wood? If they match, would you be ok using a nosing that wouldn't match exactly to the flooring?

Is it possible to have you post a picture showing the stairs so we can get an idea of what products we might be able to use with the least amount of changes?

Stairs can be a bit tricky so it's best if we see what you have to work with. Thanks, CFR. Commercial Floor RepJul 21, I'm sorry to say, but a large percent of stair nosing is "overlap". We see this everyday. One of the problems that we see with LVT is it is very thin. This makes it difficult to produce an appropriate, flush stair nose it can be done If this is another material wood, metal, rubber, etc then an overlap is about all we can do for these types of installs.

The thickness again that darn thickness of the LVT is at odds with "traditional" milled products for hardwood, tile, etc. You can ask for a special "milling" thickness but that adds on plenty of cost where you wouldn't expect it.

The overlap is often considered acceptable until someone complains in many parts of the country unless building codes specifically prohibit overlapping nosing. You are welcome to try to find something that comes closer to "flush" If you guestimate 3 linear feet per stair and if you have 5 stairs per level 10 noses needed x 3ft you get the picture.

That cost is considered "normal" scary I know I'm sorry to say but you are seeing a 'normal' cost and a 'routine' overlap. You are welcome to change it Good luck.LifeGuard stops spills in their tracks by preventing odor-causing spills and pet accidents from seeping through to the pad and subfloor.
